Easter Egg Nest Bread with Candied Bacon

Candied Bacon


200 g

Eskort Rindless Streaky Bacon

65 ml (¼ C)

castor sugar

Egg Nest Bread


1 kg

store-bought bread dough

125 ml (½ C)


125 ml (½ C)

castor sugar

5 ml (1 t)

vanilla essence


chocolate Easter eggs


egg, for glazing

125 ml (½ C)

flour for dusting

100 g

dark/milk chocolate

100 g

white chocolate


Easter Egg Nest Bread

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.

  • Roll the dough out on a flour-dusted surface into a square form, until about 1 cm thick.

  • In a small mixing bowl, mix the butter, castor sugar and vanilla together until a paste forms.

  • Cover the dough with the paste and carefully lifting the edge of one side, fold the dough over once onto itself, creating a rectangular form.

  • Slice across the length of the dough to create six equally-sized strips.

  • Loosely twist each strip and then loop the twist into a circle to create a nest, tucking the ends underneath.

  • Place the nests on a greased baking tray.

  • Beat the egg and use a pastry brush to glaze each nest.

  • Loosely cover the nests with cling wrap and set aside until they have risen to double their size.

  • Once the nests are ready, place an easter egg on top of each nest and bake for 25 - 30 minutes until golden brown.

  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking tray before drizzling with chocolate.

Candied Bacon

  • While the nests are set aside to rise, place the bacon on a baking tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle with castor sugar.

  • Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 180°C or until crisp and caramelised.

  • Remove the bacon from the baking paper and set aside to cool down.

Chocolate Drizzle

  • Once the nest breads have cooled down, prepare the melted chocolate for drizzling.

  • Roughly chop up the white chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl set over (not in) a saucepan of simmering water.

  • Allow to melt, stirring occasionally until all the chocolate has melted.

  • Decant the melted chocolate into a small mixing bowl, using a spatula to scrape the melted chocolate off the sides of the heatproof bowl.

  • Repeat the process with the dark/milk chocolate.

  • Using a spoon, drizzle the dark/milk chocolate over the nests, followed by drizzles of the white chocolate.


  • Serve each nest bread drizzled with melted chocolate and topped with crispy candied bacon.
