Bacon Steamed Buns
Bacon Steamed Buns

Take a bao ‘cause our buns are steamin’ hot. We mean literally! These #JustDelicious Bacon Steamed Bao Buns will have you bowing down for sure.

For the buns


250 g

cake flour

5 ml

instant yeast

2.5 ml ;


2.5 ml


150 ml

warm water

For the bacon


200 g

Eskort Rindless Back Bacon

2 cm

fresh ginger, finely chopped


red chilli, finely chopped

15 ml

hoisin sauce

15 ml

soy sauce

200 ml

chicken stock

15 g



cucumber, thinly sliced


spring onions, sliced


radishes, thinly sliced


  • Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 25 ml warm water, leave to stand for 5 - 10 minutes until bubbles start forming.

  • Sift flour and salt together and add yeast, mix until well incorporated with the flour, add water a little at a time until a dough forms.

  • Knead dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic (dough springs back).

  • Place dough into an oiled bowl, cover with a dishcloth and place in a warm spot to rise, until double in size (about 30 minutes).

  • Once risen, lightly knock down and divide dough into 4 - 6 balls and place on a greased muffin tray to allow to rise for a second time (cover again and place back in a warm spot).

  • Once dough balls have risen, heat a pot with boiling water, place a bamboo steamer on top and place each bun inside, cover with a lid and allow to steam for 25 - 30 minutes.

  • Remove buns from steamer and set aside.

  • In a large pan, heat butter and fry bacon until lightly browned. Add ginger, red chilli, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, chicken stock and sugar and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Bacon is ready once it becomes syrupy, remove from heat, cover and keep warm.

  • Break open the steamed buns and spoon the bacon mixture inside.

  • Top with slice spring onion, radishes and cucumber and serve.
